Do the thing!

This week has been half term for my two boys, and fellow parents will testify to this: it’s easier being at work!

I suppose it’s a bit harder when you’re a business owner too, as time off is never really time off. This week at work, we had an issue with the link to the online forms you all complete before you come to see us, and it took me a solid two days to fix.

It’s a constant juggling act of entertaining the kids, feeding the kids, checking in with work, social media planning, meetings, walking the dogs, and doing the household chores, to name just a few.

So, why then, with all this to do, do I catch myself wasting time watching videos on Instagram of dogs doing crazy things or videos on how to make a diamond ring out of a brass hexagonal nut?

It reminded me of a video I saw by Nigel Botterill from the Entrepreneurs Circle in which he said something like this…

Do the thing.

Preparing for doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Scheduling time to do the thing, isn’t doing the thing.

Making a to-do list isn’t doing the thing.

Telling people you’re going to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Browsing social media looking for inspiration about how to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Hating yourself for not doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Resenting other people who ARE doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Focussing on the obstacles in the way of you doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Fantasising about all the adoration you’ll receive when you’ve done the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Reading about doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Reading about how other people did the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Reading this email isn’t doing the thing.

The only thing that is doing the thing, is doing the thing.

The work just needs doing.

Do the thing.

Until next time,

Charlotte

P.S. Exercise is the same. The thought of it is often worse than doing it and it never takes as long as you think it will. By the time you’ve convinced yourself you haven’t got time to do it, or justified doing it tomorrow, you could have done it. Just do the thing!
